Samara's Cultural Assimilation

Photobucket
This is Samara's trusty umbrella. It is just her size and she LOVES it! When you think of using an umbrella what kind of weather comes to mind? Rain? Try again. Here in Singapore umbrellas are used not only for rain but also for sun protection. No one wants a tan here or the skin damage that comes along with it. They do everything to protect themselves from the sun.

It is hard to believe we've been here almost a year. It has been both challenging and rewarding. While Singapore is certainly a mild version of Asia, there are still plenty of differences (like umbrellas for the sun, excruciatingly slow walkers, etc.). There are many aspects of the culture here that we will never adopt, but apparently this is one we will.
When Jody and Dano were here Samara announced one day, "Mom, I need to take my umbrella with us in case it is sunny." We about died laughing. She has told me several times since that she needs to bring it because it's so bright outside. I'm sure she's overheard me telling people about this but it's funny nonetheless.

She and I head home in two (count them...TWO) days. We can't wait. Ben follows a week later. While we are very grateful for all the places we've been able to visit over here there is still no place like home. We watched a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving movie about the Mayflower a few weeks ago. Samara explained the story of the Mayflower to me in her own words today as we were talking about our trip home to America. She said that the kids on the boat were going to America from Singapore because they missed their families and they wanted to see their Grandpas and Grandmas. History retold by a 2-year old. Can you guess what we've been talking about?!

  1. Cute. LOVE the matching dress and umbrella. Samara and her umbrella story remind me of a friend of mine in Seattle. They were driving on a rare sunny day one winter and her kids exclaimed from the back seat, "Mom! The sun is hurting our eyes!!"

  3. Yay! You're coming! I hope you survive the long plane ride alone with Samara! I'm sure she's a great traveler, but I always felt wiped after traveling for 14 plus hour on a plane!

The pictures are darling! I love how the umbrella matches her dress! Be prepared for COLD weather (which I know you love, but don't be shocked to find the temps in the teens!)

What lens did you use for these pictures? I am buying another lens in a couple of weeks and I'm on the lookout for what I want. :)

  4. Some days I think I might adopt a kid just so you can take pictures of him/her (whichever) for me! ADORABLE! Also too cute is the needing the umbrella to shield from the sun thing. Tell her to keep that up though; as one fair skinned person to another, just go ahead and give up on the idea of a tan. Just try to preserve the epidermis. As for aspects of the culture you'll never adopt-what? don't you want to make fried frog legs a July 4th tradition? :)

  6. That matching dress and umbrella is almost more cuteness than I can stand. I so wish y'all could swing by North Carolina while you're here.

Just call the umbrella a parasol when you're here and all will be well.

  8. Wow, you guys are already home! Hope the trip went well. Once again, I've loved your Singapore adventures and can't wait to hear about how Samara adjusts to life back in U S of A.

  9. Hi Cheryl, Sarah's mom in law here. I love your blog, especially the photo of you going up the mountain..you certainly didn't take that photo, tee hee. Also your daughter with her parasol...what a painting that would make. I so enjoyed meeting and spending time with you in Singapore. I want to thank you for mailing the packet from Sarah and sending me your photos. Very kind of you to send the family portait photos. And also some of your Little India pictures. I am going to start a new Asia series very soon...but first trying to update Facbook, blogger, website..get the business end overwith!!

The best to you in 2010! Love having a new decade. And again thank you for your generosity of sharing your photos. Sharon
