Samara and I have already made 12 or 13 flights together so it felt so weird to be on a plane without her. I did, however, get the emergency row exit seat with the extra legroom, which pretty much equals first class on a budget airline. I felt a little nervous when we landed and this is what the airport looked like. I arrived Friday evening (it's just a 1.5 hour flight). Fortunately, against my insisting I'd make it to the hotel on my own in a taxi, the Smiths kindly arranged for the hotel shuttle to pick me up. Russia made me a little too brave. Sometimes I forget that I don't speak Thai and not everywhere is as safe as Singapore.

This is Collin, our new pal and the other climber in our group. He's Irish and also had a great accent. He's been traveling in the region for 3 months and had 3 more to go--lucky guy! When we got our lunch I commented how it wasn't the typical climbing fare. Deborah had just apologized to Collin for our being silly and taking so many photos (i.e., making him say cheese in the middle of a climb). He said, "yes, I'm very sick of it." Collin was referring to the food but she thought he was referring to us. Deborah looked at me and started apologizing telling him he could switch to a different team. At this point, I understood what he was referring to but I couldn't stop laughing enough to tell them both. Then he said, "wait, what do you mean? I am talking about the food. I am so sick of chicken and rice." It was hilarious.

After lunch and clearing up the misunderstanding, we walked around to the sunrise side of the island to the beautiful Phra Nang beach. We saw a very interesting sailor's fertility shrine and lots of long boats. There were several 'food stands' in the water selling all kinds of interesting snacks. This so could have been my job.

The cave was huge! We had to take flashlights and climb up and down ladders. It was great. Though, when Tek started talking about the blood-sucking bats I got a bit nervous.

We rappelled down out of the cave. The first time I ever went rappelling was in YWs and I had really long hair. My hair got stuck in carabiner and my head was bent all the way down to my waist my the time I got the bottom. Thankfully, that didn't happened this time.

Deb made the day so fun!! The whole experience was just amazing. At the risk of sounding cheesy, it was sort of life changing. To be able to do something I dreamed about so long ago was so neat. It has motivated me to get in better shape and get strong so I can continue to do things I've always loved as I get older. It's helped me realize that you never have to stop living or put your life on hold for events that are out of your control. It honestly made every horrible day when we first moved to Singapore worth it. It almost makes the grocery runs and long train rides worth it too. :)

Deborah climbed it after me, took her camera up, and got this beautiful shot.

After the long climb, we did one last climb and that's where we got most of our best shots so it was well worth pushing myself. Like I said earlier, Tik planned the day perfectly.

The four of us back at the beach. A perfect day. One I will never forget.
I am SOOOOO happy you got to do this! How wonderful and awesome!
ReplyDeleteThat looked so AWEEESSOOMMMEEE and fun!!! Makes me want to do some things I'd dreamed of as a kid!! =0)
ReplyDeleteOkay, I can't wait to read Kelly's comment once she reads your post-a guy named Collin w/ an Irish accent? She'll be wishing SHE was the one who planned the vacation to Thailand & not your friend Deb. Glad you got to go have some fun girl time & live out a decade long dream! :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing pictures! That is awesome that you got to do that! You and Deborah are rockstars! Wow, I am impressed!
ReplyDeleteThat is the coolest vacation ever. I know what you mean about wanting to stay in shape as you get older. I don't ever want to be sitting on the sidelines just because I wasn't in shape. There are way too many fun things to do in life.
ReplyDeleteWowzers! You are one brave mama. (I do NOT do heights) These photos are breathtaking. So gorgeous.
ReplyDeletefirst of all (and yes, this is going to be a LONG comment ;)) i am soooooooooooooooo jealous!!! i've wanted to go to thailand since, well....so long i can't remember. also, an irish dude? an irish dude who likes to travel? an irish dude who goes to thailand and goes rock climbing? that was hilarious about the misunderstanding. but i apologize, i digress....photos? amazing, as usual! those national geographics do have a way of creating nearly unrealistic dreams you harbor for the rest of your life, don't they? however, i am thrilled you got to live out yours! that's awesome! do you think there are any 5plustax tickets from nc to thailand? your concerns about the airport made me think of a friend of the family's whose fiance was coming to nc for the first time. unfortunately it was immediately after hurricane floyd and so his introduction to the city airport was a fruit stand for a baggage check. good news is, he still married her anyway. looking at the pictures i was going, 'dude, that's awesome!' however, i was a bit uneasy for you because i have this irrational fear of caves. looking at all those crevices it is easy to imagine some horror-inspiring near mythological creature of terror laying in wait. (i told you it was irrational.) so, it made me feel a little better when you said you got a bit freaked when he started talking about blood sucking bats. (have you ever noticed they look slightly like deranged rats with wings? i'm just saying is all.....)a shrine to sailor's fertility? interesting. it's not cheesy to say it was life changing-if i ever actually get to englandirelandscotlandwalesportugalspainitalynewzealandgermanybelgiumswitzerlandaustriathailand
ReplyDeletechinaindiasouthafricamaltagreeceetc. i'll probably cry at the airport. just 'cause. right now, though, it's fun living vicariously through my friends. glad you had fun and got to live out a dream!!!
Wow! What an amazing thing to FINALLY do something you've always wanted to do! You are one adventerous woman! The plane ride was only $5? Seriously? Tell me this is in Singapore money because $5 won't even buy luch here!
ReplyDeleteYou have some great friends. We only lived in the Caribbean (not nearly as far from family as you are) and only had our parents visit and our best friends.
It looks like it was beautiful and you got some great shots!
Thanks for the reminder that "age is just a number" and how important it is to keep our bodies strong so we can enjoy life!
I think you are amazing, Cheryl. I would have been terrified to do all of those climbs! What a once in a lifetime experience for you, and I'm so happy for you that you were able to do this. What a gorgeous, fun day (and I cannot believe how cheap those flights were!!!!)
ReplyDeleteWow - so awesome! I am insanely jealous. :) And GOOD FOR YOU for getting out and doing it! I sometimes have a hard time doing something just for me, but you're right that we should always live life and take those opportunities. Fun!
ReplyDeleteWOW! I had no idea you two were such dare devils! I think that is the most amazing story I've heard in awhile! To think you actually got to do something you NEVER thought would be possible. Wow.
ReplyDeleteThese pictures are awesome. I am so glad that you were able to fulfill your dream. I am impressed too. Don't think I could ever climb some of those. Are you guys leaving to come home for good or for vacation?
ReplyDeleteWe are just here for a visit. :(
ReplyDeleteCher, I can't imagine you ever being on the sidelines or out of shape. Not gonna happen! How wonderful to do something you have always dreamed of. Now I am going to sit down and think of what my dream is?! Everyone in our ward is running a marathon this spring but since I am still nursing a baby, I had to opt out. Perhaps next year will be the year for that. Hope you have a good time at sailing home on the Mayflower!
