A Big Map and a Book

I loved majoring in Geography and when I'd tell someone that I was majoring in Geography, I'd typically get one of two responses.  First, "Oh, you study rocks.  How interesting."  Geography.  Geology.  They sort of sound the same, I guess.  Or "So you study maps?  You must know where every country on the map is."  Geography is more than just maps!  Geography is ecology, anthropology, and history all bundled in one discipline.  There are many sub-disciplines too: cultural, physical, environmental, political, economic, demographics, etc.  That map question got pretty old when I'd hear it over and over again.  But I do actually love maps.  And I wish I knew where every country was and that I could visit them all too!  While we were building, I decided I wanted a big map wall and it's finally up.  I may be a "geography nerd" but I feel gleefully happy every time I look at my map. :)

I saw a tutorial for these mini-polaroid magnets.  Tiny pictures are ridiculously cute, aren't they?  My map isn't magnetic so my plan is to mount the pictures on foamboard and use a paper tape to attach them to the places we've been.   First, I want to get caught up on photobooks though.  *sigh*  Why do they take me so long to finish?  Lizzie's first year book (click on lower right corner of book below to flip the pages) probably took me 2,033 hours.  And now she's almost two and Samara needs one for last year and I want to make several of our time and travel oversees.  Because why take so many millions of photos if they just sit on my hard drive?  Anyone want to help me get caught up?

  1. I love this all. I need to plan another trip out there to see it all in person. And I need to make some magnets like those. I think I'd use mod podge or varathane to get them all shiny. First I need a color printer.........

My grand plan for pictures was to do two photo books each year when the girls started school. I'd make one for the first year of their lives and one for the current year of their lives. Then the next year, I'd do the second and the current. After six years I'd be caught up.

I have not started a single page.....

  4. Yay, I love this post! I love that room in your house too, with the map! So cool!

I just finished Bridgette's YEAR ONE book. Its only 265 pages! UGH! But so worth it! You're right thought, what fun is it to have all these pictures and never look at them because they're on the computer!? (I have to say, blogging Bridgette's first year was a good idea, because it only took a week to put together as I was able to upload her blog and dump it in a book! Of course, each page was hand crafted as far as lay out, so I could squeeze as many photos as I could! Still, worth it!)

The book looks AWESOME! Love your world-travels!

  6. Love the map, your travels, your BEAUTIFUL baby book of sweet Lizzie, and I think I have another reason to go back to school. Do they have a combined photography/geography major where you can travel the world as you study?!? You do amazing work!

  14. I love maps too! We have a huge world and a huge states map hanging in our living room. And we are trying to memorize where every country is. We are on our second year of intense geography and having a blast. Next year we'll do something different though. Hey, I wanted to thank you for being the only one to comment on what I should do about my blog being too full. I looked into it and it's $2.49 a month but you get a lot more storage. I still haven't figured out if I should get it or print it into a book. Thanks for taking the time to help. I didn't even know you could purchase more storage until you told me. I love your blog! I loved reading about the girls at 18 months and 5 years. Plus all the skiing stuff. It sounds so fun! You do such a great job with your blog! And as a mom too!
