People universally love to give unsolicited advice about child bearing and child rearing. Whether they think you have too many or too few children, should space them differently, or want to tell you something lame like "you need to relax to solve infertility," people love to get in your business. It's no different here. Shortly after Samara turned two, we were playing at the playground and a lady noticed that Samara wore a diaper still
*gasp* and that she wanted to sit on my lap and play with my hair while she drank from her sippy cup
*the horror*. The lady was staring while she sat on my lap, so I mentioned, to end the awkward stare, that Samara likes to play with my hair while she drinks as a comfort device. She said, "Hmmm...and she's not potty trained yet either? You must really coddle her." Needless to say, we avoid that lady like the plague.
The other day we were out at the park talking to a woman we'd met before. She asked Samara's age. I told her she turned two in March. She then asked, "So, does she like to read?" I said yes thinking she meant look at books or be read to. She said, "Oh that's great she's already reading on her own." Confused, I replied (thinking "do most kids read at this age?"), "No, she doesn't read by herself yet. She loves books and being read to." She then asked, "So, she's sounding out some words then?" Still confused, I replied, "No, she remembers some of the words if we've read the book before." She finished off with something like, "Oh, that's nice" in a tone of "I'm sorry your child is remedial". So regardless of the fact that Samara can't read, she's got street smarts, which have got to count for something. She can even hail a cab all by her bad self.

I learned she had this skill a few weeks ago when we were walking home from the park and she asked, "Can we take a taxi home?" I said "no" and proceeded to explain why this wasn't cost effective, which I am sure was sinking in and completely understood. In the meantime, she proceeded over to the curb, put out her arm and said, "Mom, I want to ride on taxi. I don't want to walk home. It's too far."
My kids were born reading. Duh.
ReplyDeleteThat lady's a nut cracker.
I know people who "potty train" their kids really early. And mostly it involved them constantly saying "do you need to go potty? Do you need to go potty?" for two years until their kid's three-ish and figures it out by themselves.
Plus, adults use sippy cups, too. They're called water bottles/Nalgene/straws.
And Samara totally is a taxi-cab pro. Next stop, NYC.
I just love it when others know what is better for your child than you do. She is great, adorable and just fine. Don't let the crazy woman bother you!!
ReplyDeleteSo funny! I mean, why not? Emily's reading "Great Expectations" right now, so Samara is not at least reading the abridged version? Darn, Emily will be so disappointed that they can't discuss it next time we Skype. Crazies. I'm still giving Emily a sippy cup to drink out of most of the time, even though she can drink out of a regular cup. Why wouldn't you take a sippy cup to the park? Thank you very much.
ReplyDeleteI like the new pictures on the side!
I don't even think about training until my kids turn three. If a child is trained before two, it is usually really the parent trained. I've seen those teach your 2 month old to read things. All I see are crazy parents.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE unsolicited advice from strangers, but most people get pretty intimidated when I come to a park with my brood. Maybe I should just take Matthew out so people can tell me the "right" way to raise children.
Emily, next time we're in NC Emily can talk to Joseph. He doesn't read Dickens yet, but he knows ALL the tween cartoon characters he watches with his older siblings. That is almost the same thing, right?
This post really made me laugh!
ReplyDeleteI worry sometimes that I am to outs spoken myself, but at least I'm not as rude as that lady LOL (or dumb)
I love her hailing a taxi! SO cute!
You make me laugh Cheryl! You have such a way with words! Frankly, I think Samara is an absolutely delightful, sassy and gorgeous little girl! And I am sure, when she's ready, she'll be reading books while on the toilet...
ReplyDeleteHow funny! Somehow I believe you know your child the best as well as your circumstances.
ReplyDeleteSamara is adorable! She reminds me of Natalie at that age. I love her little shoes, they are so cute!
Wow! I've never had people talk to me like that. Did she have kids who do all those things early? I don't know any 2 year olds who can swim. If it makes you feel better, I took my kids to the pool ZERO times last summer and am trying to make up for it this year, but they still don't know how to swim and they are way older than Samara! The taxi picture is adorable. I love hearing about all the fun things you do. Sounds like quite the experience. Oh, and she's an amazing talker for a 2 year old. I'm surprised they didn't comment on that. Y'all are doing a fine job!
ReplyDeleteSamara is the smartest little whippersnapper in the world and don't let anyone make you think any differently! I just want to kiss her cute little cheeks!
